Could anyone help me choose binoculars please?

I'm going on safari and want to spot wild game during the day and possibly night too; I also like to stargaze and locate the planets. I want some binoculars that are light to carry and use without a tripod. What specifications and features should I look for? I can afford up to �500 for a pair or maybe I should have 2 at �250 each to avoid arguments with my wife!
